British Matchplay Championships 2014
Prizewinning Preston continues streak at Bluewater
Paul Preston finished runner-up in Pool B to continue his 100% winning streak in the British Mini Golf Tour.
Having not seen the course before the event, Preston was very apprehensive about his chances going into the tournament on Sunday 6 July. The tournament also marked the debut for Harry Preston on the tour.
A really tricky group meant that Paul lost all his group games to Chris Wood (UK rank 13 - July 2014), Steve Lovell (23) and Adam Smith (3) but this meant that Paul went into the lower half of the draw to see if he could win the Pool B crown.
Another initial defeat to Will Donnelly (5) meant a crucial match versus debutant Ollie Baily and the first win of the day came Preston's way with a 5&4 score.
The next game due to the spaces in the lower half of the draw meant a rematch against Will to see who would contest the Pool B Final. A titanic battle ensued with holes being won by both players to see frequent momentum changes. Paul held a one hole lead down the lengthy downhill 18th hole. But with a three foot putt to tie the hole, Paul holed the putt to win the match and qualify for the final.
The final was a re-run of the opening match against Chris Wood which Chris won comfortably 5&4 but considering it was a new course to Paul, a good result when you consider a victory against the UK ranked number 6.
